Cherri L. Shelton, Esq. is the Owner of Shelton Law Practice, LLC, a boutique employment law firm located in the Atlanta area primarily focusing on employee rights.
Prior to starting her law firm, Ms. Shelton worked with an Atlanta employment law firm as a Litigation Associate, exclusively representing plaintiffs in employment discrimination cases. In this role, Ms. Shelton handled a variety of employment discrimination cases involving retaliation and disparate treatment based on race, gender, national origin, color, age, and disability.
Ms. Shelton has partnered with various Atlanta law firms representing small and mid-sized businesses pursuing or defending matters of employment law and commercial litigation. Ms. Shelton also previously worked with the Georgia Department of Labor, Unemployment Appeals Tribunal, during which time she independently conducted more than seven hundred (700) unemployment appeal hearings where employers and claimants appealed previous determinations concerning the award or denial of unemployment insurance benefits.
Overall, the sum of these experiences further solidified Ms. Shelton’s interest in advocating on behalf of those who otherwise may not be heard, as well as her desire to begin her own law practice.
Ms. Shelton holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Spelman College, where she graduated cum laude, and she earned her Juris Doctorate from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. During law school, Ms. Shelton was selected for a Judicial Internship with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (Atlanta District Office). Ms. Shelton also served as an Associate Notes Editor of The John Marshall Law Journal.
Ms. Shelton is a graduate of GABWA’s Professional Development Academy and she has served on GABWA’s Executive Board since 2012. Ms. Shelton was nominated to serve as a member of the State Bar’s Committee On Professionalism in 2013 and she continues to serve the State Bar in that capacity.
In addition to her involvement in the legal community, Ms. Shelton mentors students through Spelman College’s Sister to Sister Mentorship Program and she volunteers with the National Black Arts Festival’s Annual Gala and Auction, among other community service activities and events.
